Calculating Percentages - High

A donation of $350,000 was made for the local hospital. The hospital spent 15% of this donation to open a children’s playroom. An additional 18% was spent to buy new equipment for the cardiac center. Finally, they used 25% to open a library for the elderly ward.
How much did the hospital spend out of the original donation and what is left for them to utilize later?

a. Amount spent $147,000 Amount left $203,000
b. Amount spent $110,000 Amount left $240,000
c. Amount spent $203,000 Amount left $147,000
d. Amount spent $240,000 Amount left $110,000

Answer: a

Explanation:
To find the total amount spent add the percentages as follows:
0.15 + 0.18 + 0.25 = 0.58
Therefore 58% of the $350,000 was spent. In order to calculate that amount we must multiply as follows:
$350,000 x 0.58 = $203,000
This is the amount spent out of the original donation.

To find out what is let we subtract as follows:
$350,000 - $203,000 = $147,000
This is the amount left.
