Counting Change - Elementary

Which of the following combinations should you pick in order to make $1.67?

a. 6 quarters + 1 dime + 1 nickel + 1 penny
b. 6 quarters + 1 dime + 1 nickel + 2 pennies
c. 3 quarters + 1 dime + 3 nickels + 1 penny
d. 5 quarters + 1 dime + 2 nickels + 2 pennies

Answer: b

Explanation:
A quarter = .25 cents
A dime = .10 cents
A nickel = .05 cents
A penny = .01 cent

In order to make $1.67 we’ll need to add the following:
6(.25) + .10 + .05 + 2(.01) =
1.50 + .10 + .05 + .02 = $1.67
