We must use the Order of Operations when solving this problem. If you remember the following letters in the correct order then you can solve problems like these easily:

P-E-D-M-A-S

These letters stand for:

Parenthesis – Exponents – Division – Multiplication – Addition and Subtraction

Looking at the above problem and using the P-E-D-M-A-S rule, we can determine that the Exponents must be done first, then multiplication and then the addition and subtraction working left to right. Here goes:
