Simple Equations - Elementary Math

Mrs. Smith volunteered to take the neighborhood kids to the theater for a matinee. The total number of kids she chaperoned was 10. The movie’s price tickets were as follows:
Adults = $4, Children under 18 = $2.
If Mrs. Smith needed to find the total price of all the tickets, which of the following equations should she use?

a. 4 x 2 + 10 =
b. 10 + 4 + 2 =
c. 4 + (2 x 10) =
d. 10 x (4 + 6) =

Answer: c

Explanation:

The first step is to find the price of tickets for all 10 kids. Since each child’s ticket price will be $2 then the total will be (2 x 10).
In order to find the total price of all the tickets, we must add the price of Mrs. Smith’s ticket, which is $4.
Therefore the equation that will tell us the total price of all the tickets will be:
4 + (2 x 10) = Note that the question asked for the equation only and not the final answer, which comes out to be $24 for all the tickets.
